What happen to my subscribers?!

I only check my feedburner account once in a while, thrice a week the most. But when I checked again my feedburner account just this moment, I saw this:

I don't have a lot of subscribers just like the big time bloggers, but I do have few subscribers on my blogs. I don't know what happened to feedburner or to my readers, but if you are experiencing the same problem, just leave a comment so we can help each other solve the problem. If you are a subscriber of my two blogs, leave a comment if you are encountering problems in each blog's feed.

Video uploaded on youtube by detthy77

This is another movie to wait because basically, this is the story on how Wolverine became Wolverine. What I like about the trailer is that at last, my second favorite X-Men character, Gambit, is now on the big screen! Also in the movie is Deadpool and Sabertooth.

Congratulations to our new RNs!

Congratulations to the newly proclaimed Registered Nurses of the Philippines! Also, I would like to congratulate this year's #1 passer, Aira Therese Salamanca Javier, who is also a Thomasian. I would like to congratulate also the Thomasians who dominated this year's top ten list of examinees. You made our school proud of you.

I am a Thomasian all my life, but I haven't made my school proud of me, yet. Not now, but maybe in the future. =]

For those who failed, don't be discouraged. Failing is a painful experience, but this is a good chance to reassess yourself and correct your mistakes. Remember, you can't go up unless you went down, right?

You can check the list of top ten examinees here.

Batman: The Dark Knight

I've been waiting for this movie for so long and finally, I had the chance to see the new Batpod, and of course, The Joker this afternoon. The original plan for us was to see the movie in Trinoma, but my girlfriend and I decided to see the movie at Sta. Lucia East Grand Mall.

Honestly, I was kinda disappointed about the movie because I did not feel in its action scenes the thrill that I was looking for, except for the first scene where The Joker and his gang robbed a bank. Maybe I expected too much. Also, there are lots of talks than action in this movie. I have a very short attention span, and having lots of conversations made me bored. Talking about talks, I find it funny how the Batman speaks. I just don't know why. =]

What I really enjoyed was every scene where The Joker was in it. I am still amazed how Heath Ledger pull that kind of acting. Up to now, I can't imagine that the one portraying The Joker was Heath Ledger. He is scary, and cool at the same time. My favorite Joker scene was the one with Brian, the man who dresses like the Batman. The Joker was just pure wicked in that scene, and I like that.

I guess this will be the best Joker portrayal ever. Again, hats off to Heath Ledger for taking the role of The Joker to the next level.

Paralysis in stroke

Maybe all of us had seen a stroke patient, and maybe you will notice that when their affected part is on the right side of the brain, the weakness or the paralysis in his arms or legs is on the other side of the body. Ever wonder the reason behind that? If you don't know, then continue reading. =]

Most of the stroke patients has paralysis on the opposite side of the affected part of the brain. The reason is that our nerves crosses just behind our neck. It is also called decussation. Let's take the picture below as an example.

The blue spot is the part of the brain where it suffers a stroke, and it is on the left side. And the red line is our nerves.

Which side of muscles in the HEAD do you think is affected? The answer is still on the left side. Why? Because the nerves hasn't crossed yet. The affected muscles on the head would still be the same side of the brain that has suffered a stroke.

Which side of muscles on the arms and legs do you think is affected? The answer now is on the right side. Because the nerves has crossed already. The side of the brain that has suffered a stroke is the left side. The muscles affected on the head is the left side also, crossing on our neck, affecting the right side below it.

This paralysis is called contra-lateral paralysis. It is the most common paralysis in stroke patients. But a friend of mine, which is a doctor, also told me that there is also a paralysis which affects the same side of the body from the head to foot. This is called ipsi lateral paralysis.

I hope you learned something new today. If you have any questions about the topic, just leave a comment on this post. =]

Heath Ledger as The Joker

I hate clowns when I was a kid. I am never fond of them and I get irritated very quickly whenever I see one.

Not until I saw some trailers of the latest film from The Batman franchise, The Dark Knight. The portrayal of The Joker by Heath Ledger(God rest his soul) was just awesome. I guess this is the only clown that I will ever like. And I mean EVER. I even tried acting as The Joker whenever I am alone here in our house.LOL.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but me and my girlfriend already set a date on Friday to watch the movie. I just can't wait for that day. Here is a scene of The Joker in the movie The Dark Knight:

video uploaded by GothamCentral

I just can't picture that Heath Ledger is the one acting as The Joker. He really reinvented himself for this role. Hats off to our man Heath Ledger. He came out of the industry with a bang. So sad we can't see him do this kind of movies anymore.

Back from training...

I wasn't able to blog that much this past week because I attended a one-week training at the National Headquarters of Red Cross about Basic Life Support and First Aid.

The experience was really, really great. It was kinda exhausting at times, but it was worth it. You will be put in a almost-real life situations on how to rescue a patient or a victim and transfer it from floor to floor. It was fun. And what's best of meeting new friends, right? I also meet my fellow Thomasian and batchmate, Laarni, who was one of my instructor in the training.

I will be back there next, next Monday to get my Certificate of Completion. I only got my Certificate of Attendance today. Here's how it looked like(I edited some of the pic for safety purposes =]):

If you want to train at Red Cross, just go to the nearest chapter in your place and simply register your name there. There will be a fee, about 1000+ pesos though. And if you want to train at the National Headquarters at Port Area Manila and don't know how to go to that place, just put comment on this blog and I'll try my best to guide you. =]

Can't sleep before the big day?

Sometimes, we tend to get anxious the day before the big day. I mean some big event, something very important, or even some thing that we are afraid to fail at. Just like what happened to me last night.

I got a return demo today about BLS(Basic Life Support) at PNRC(Philippine National Red Cross) National Headquarters. In my deep sleep, I woke up 3 am in the morning then I started panicking. I got so anxious because I started to fear that I might forget the steps during the practical exam. I have trouble getting back to sleep for almost 30 minutes. That's good for me because the last time I experience this kind of anxiety was before taking the Nursing Licensure Exam. I slept only for three hours, from 10 pm, up to 1 am in the morning, and I can't go back to sleep up to the time of examination.

Due to last night's experience, I experimented some ways on how to sleep while getting anxious. I can say it is effective on me because I fell back to sleep within 30 minutes, but I will not guarantee you that these will also be effective on you. Here's how I did it:

1. Change my position. I don't know how to explain this but this is effective on me.*wink*

2. I pulled my hair. I just pull my hair enough to stretch my scalp and not hurt me. This has a relaxing effect on me. Very relaxing. =p

3. Elevated my legs. It relaxes the muscles of my feet.

4. Cleared my mind. I guess this is the hardest part. I just breathe deeply and let my mind think by itself, never intervene on those thoughts, and without knowing it, I fell asleep again.

These are the only things I did last night that help me brought back to my sleep again. As I said earlier, these are only effective on me. There are no scientific basis on the above tips whatsoever. You can also find techniques on your own, so if you have some tips to share, do comment on this blog. =]

Red Cross Training

I will be attending a training about first aid and basic life support next week at the Red Cross headquarters near Intramuros. The training is from July 14 up to July 19.

I would like to take this chance to put a notice to the readers/visitors of this blog. If the schedule is a full day class, I may not be able to blog as often as possible even though I was a jeepney ride away. I will try to find time to blog though. Well I don't know the full schedule yet that is why I am not sure.

If you are going to the training also, just leave a comment on this blog and let's meet at the training. =]

My Big Toe lesson

I remember when I was in high school, I played at the basketball tournament for our section in the intramural of our school. I remember that time I was thinking what shoes to wear, if I were to use my old running shoes, or my new sneakers. I chose my sneakers because I thought it was kinda cool.

My mistake is that sneakers must not be used in playing basketball. The effect of using sneakers in me while playing basketball was it hurt my big toe. I felt some pain in my big toe while playing basketball but I guess my pain threshold was high and I didn't mind the pain while playing. After the game, I took off my shoe and take a peek at my big toe. I am very surprised because the nail bed of my big toe was almost black. I thought my big toe was going to die because it was kinda necrotic. Luckily, it healed and went back to its normal state now.

I learned my lesson pretty well. Never again I will wear sneakers if I am going to play any kind of sport. Either you can wear your favorite Adidas shoes or Nike shoes, it would be okay, as long as you don't wear sneakers while playing basketball or you might end up the same experience as mine.

Willing to change is the key...

Sometimes, due to life's stresses, people resort to things which they know are harmful to them, but still they use it to escape from reality. Because of these, people tend to rely on these things.

A person who is depending on substances still can change from his habits. As they say, as long as you are living, there is a chance to change. But in order to change, the patient must decide from himself that he wants to change. The patient needs to accept that he has a problem that needs to be corrected.

Changing alone is a very difficult task to do. Though there are people who stopped their habits by themselves, some still need expert help to assist them in solving their problem. What they do is to go to a drug treatment center to seek help professional help.

Cliffside Malibu is a drug rehab center which offers help to patients with complete facilities, with competent staff that is ready to help patients in attaining their goals, and with realistic drug treatment program that suits the patient's needs. Cliffside Malibu cares for the patient right from the start, from the patient that is willing to change, up to the time that he is free and decides to himself that he will refrain from such activities.

A new record in unique visitors in a day

Last Sunday, July 6th, I established a new record in unique visitors in a day for my sports blog. Thanks to my UFC 86 results post which got almost 18,000 unique visitors for that day, and as far as I remember, the concurrent visitors went 1300+. That's a very big achievement for me as a small time blogger. I am still learning the ropes to have more and more visitors. I forgot to capture the number of concurrent visitors, but here is a graph from projectwonderful for the number of unique visitors:

Prescription Eye Glasses

I've been wearing prescription eyeglasses since I was in my fifth grade. I know it is a very young age to start wearing glasses, but it runs in the family. I got no choice but to wear them. But right now, a lot of people wear eyeglasses even though they have no disorder in their eyes. They use it to complement their fashion statement.

Before picking an eyeglass to buy and wear, we should choose what's 'in' in the fashion trend also. The first thing that I consider is that the frame should be trendy, just like the Incredible Stylish New Frames From Zenni. They also got variable dimension frames that suits your need. Here is an example of the Variable Dimension Frames From Zenni.

What's good about this is that their products' price range starts from just $8! This is surely a great offer you can't miss. So stop wasting time and try now the Zenni Optical $ 8 Rx Eyeglasses.

No hilot (massage therapy) on fractures please

Every Filipino thought that if you got a fracture, or even a suspected fracture, the first thing they do is to go to a manghihilot(massage therapist) right? I've been looking for a right English term for the word 'hilot'(massage therapy), but massage therapy is the closest. Here is another meaning according to wikipedia:

Hilot (/hee-lot/) is an ancient Filipino art of healing, commonly used today to relax stressed muscles. Masahista (Hilot practitioners) as well as arbularyos are usually cheaper alternatives to medical doctors in the Philippines, especially in very deep rural areas. Hilot employ chiropractic manipulation and massage for the diagnosis and treatment of musculoligamentous and musculoskeletal ailments. They also have been known to reset dislocated and sprained joints such as the knee, ankle, fingers and metacarpal bones. Hilot tend to be chiropractors while arbularyos tend to be herbalists. Midwives are also called hilots.

As a health professional, we do not encourage this kind of practice IF there is a fracture or a suspected fracture because it may cause delay in bone healing, malunion, or nonunion. It may also add injury to the fractured bone because as the pressure is applied, it adds stress to the injured area.

If you have a suspected or a fractured bone, here are some tips on what to do.

1. Immobilize the affected part- This is the first thing and the most important thing you will do in case that you got a bone fracture. Never ever (a la Chris Jericho) attempt to move, use, or apply pressure on the affected area. That is why sometimes you see people in casts. Its function is to immobilize the affected area to have a proper bone healing. They are in casts because they did step number 2.

2. Seek medical attention - If you are able to go to a nearest hospital while immobilizing the injured part, then go(example: arm fracture, finger fracture, etc). If not, then let somebody call an ambulance for you. The attending physician knows best on what to do next after having a proper assessment on your injury.

Ever watched WWE? When a wrestler is selling an 'injury' to the crowd, the people inside the ring wait for the paramedics to arrive before the 'injured' wrestler was taken out of the scene. They don't touch the wrestler because they have no proper knowledge about that aspect. Even if it is just acting, it is close to reality.

Dengue Fever: Part 3

In this part, I will be giving some simple guidelines on how to prevent dengue fever, especially this rainy season, which is known to be the season of dengue.

Dengue is communicable disease, and as a communicable disease, the best way of preventing its spread is cutting the mode of transfer. The mode of transfer in dengue is via the mosquito called Aedes aegypti. In order to prevent this mosquito from wreaking havoc, we must eliminate it or prevent it from getting to us. Here are some ways to eliminate it.

1. Clear all stagnant water daily. This is the main home of the said mosquito. These mosquitoes mainly survives in stagnant water. In order to prevent these mosquitoes to proliferate, we must take down their homes. What we need to do here is to simply replace water that has been collected in our buckets or if it is not needed anymore, we might as well drain it.

2. Use bug killers and screens. Though your home observes proper sanitation, but your neighbor's house is not, there is still a possibility that these mosquitoes may go inside your home. One good way to prevent them from entering your home is to put screens in your doors or windows. And if they happen to pass these screens, one way to eliminate them is having bug killers. It may cost a hundreds of pesos, but getting hospitalized surely costs a lot.

3. Use mosquito repellants. One good protection when you are going out to other places is using some mosquito repellants. I am talking about mainly of 'off lotion'. You never know which places are harboring these mosquitoes, so you might as well use this. Better be safe than sorry. Though it doesn't offer you 100% protection, it is better to have some than not.

4. Wear a set of pajamas. Since these mosquitoes mostly bites just before daytime and just before night time, why not wear a cool set of pajamas just before bedtime and you are set to a cool sleep without worries. As I said in the previous number, it doesn't protect you 100%, but it is better to have some than not.

Some traditional way to prevent mosquito bites are mosquito nets, and the neem or eucalyptus tree. These trees are said to be a good mosquito repellant.

I guess that's it for now on how to prevent dengue. I hope you learn something new today. Thanks for reading. =]
