Dengue Fever: My experience Part 2

I was confined at the UST Hospital back then because of my very, very high fever. I can still remember that I hallucinated because of that. I guess it was a condition called delirium. I am not sure if that was really it because I can't remember what really happened. My mom only reoriented me after I got back to reality the things that I said. Things that were out of reality, such as going to war etc. It was really funny now whenever I think of it, but back then, my situation was really serious.

We never thought it was dengue fever because I never got a sign that I was bleeding. Back then, the only thing we knew about dengue was bleeding. That's why my blood, especially my platelets(responsible for clotting, thus prevents bleeding) was put into monitor. I don't know if I am right but my blood was extracted from three times a day. They done it so that they'll know if my platelets are decreasing or not.

My diet was put into NDCF, which means 'no dark colored foods'. The reason behind it is that dengue causes bleeding, and to know if there is any bleeding in your GI system is via your feces. If you ate dark colored foods, it may mask the bleeding, thereby assessment will be difficult.

My platelets went 60 x 10^9 L. The normal range of platelets is 150-400 x 10^9 L. So 60 is a very dangerous score for a platelet. I realized today that I was in the brink of death. I woke up in the morning with doctors and nurses in my side, transfusing blood (platelets) on me. My mom told me that it was six bags of platelets. Dang! That's a lot. That's how serious my condition is.

After a week, I managed to survived the illness, if not, I won't be here writing this experience. I really lost weight at that time, and my prom pic can attest to that. When I am looking at my prom pic, I can't see that I am really on that pic, because I was really thin. My uniform was really loose that I looked like a flag pole. Thanks to God, that he give me another chance to live.

Part three is some guidelines on how to prevent this illness especially this rainy season.

Dengue Fever: My experience Part 1

The first time I was confined inside the hospital was when I was in my fourth year high school. I can still remember that it was just the start of the second semester of that school year.

The diagnosis of my condition then was dengue hemorrhagic fever, or dengue fever. It is caused by the mosquito called Aedes aegypti. It mostly survives in stagnant water, that is why it is a very common illness during rainy season.

Here are the very first symptoms that I experienced:

1. Fever
2. Nausea
3. Joint pains
4. Headache

**If you are feeling the symptoms above, it doesn't mean you have dengue fever. It is still better to consult your doctor for proper assessment**

I can remember that I still went to school after having a high fever for two days. I went to school with my jacket on, and it was my third day having a high fever. I was the only student at that time wearing a jacket, so if they do not know that I am sick, they probably thought that I am weird.

I was chilling at that time because our classroom have air-cons. Even I am wearing my jacket, it doesn't help me from preventing to chill. One of my classmates suggested that I went to our clinic. I am hesitant at that time because I don't want to miss school. But my classmate told my teacher about my condition, and she allowed me to go to our health clinic. There, they suggested that I must be confined for further observations and prompt treatment.

I have to end my post here. I will continue part two in my next blog post. I will also include what happened to me at that time, the procedures they've done to me, and why they did it to me. So stay tuned.

Health Tips

If you are having fever or feeling really sick for two days(the most), it is recommended that you consult your doctor immediately. Early intervention prevents further progress of the illness.

My umobile sim card

I got my umobile sim card just this afternoon. The sender of the sim card called me that if I am willing to meet in Tutuban mall instead of him going to our place. His reason is that he is afraid of going here in our place. I do understand him because a lot of people are really afraid going to our place, that is why I am willing to meet up with him in the said place. After meeting him, I now got my new umobile sim card. Here's how it looked like:

:

What I really like the most about the umobile sim card is that you will have a 100 pesos load every month for six months, and you can even change your own mobile number! I'm still thinking what mobile number I will use, so any suggestions would be much appreciated. =]

Having this sim card is free. All you need is an invitation from an existing sim card holder. If you want a umobile invite, just leave a comment here. Put your name, email address and mobile number in the comment section because it is needed in sending the invites. I can only give nine umobile invites(total of 10) because I reserved one for my girlfriend. Invites are in a first come, first serve basis. =]

A fellow blogger in need...

We all know what happened to our country this past few days during the visit of typhoon Frank. There's the sinking of the MV Princess of the Orient, which headlined the news. It was indeed a very strong typhoon, and a lot of us suffered. One who suffered greatly is a fellow blogger. His story is as follows quoted from his blog:

Last night around 5:00 PM accident happen in our house, its a disaster really the wall collapse in our kitchen area. Due to massive volume of rain landslide happened hitting the side of kitchen, the wall did not carry the load of land thus cave in leaving nothing but traces of disaster in the kitchen area. We still glad that no one is hurt during that accident, usually at that time my mother prepares dinner and other household in that area. Still we are lucky no one in the family got hurt or something.

He is asking for a little favor in all of us. I really would like to help this guy, but don't have enough funds to help. I still got no work right now and I got my income solely online. We all know how much a beginner in blogging earn right? That is why I am asking you, a reader of this blog, if you can lend a helping hand. This is my only way to help him, to extend the news in the blogosphere.

You can get the complete details by clicking here.

Myspce

Myspce is the counter part of Freindster here in the Philippines in the social networking category. These are two giant companies. But I guess Myspce is more popular in the United States than here in the Philippines.

Why am I making this post? I thought you knew already =]. Well, you would think that I misspelled the word Myspace into Myspce, right? It was intentionally misspelled because according to Googel Trends, there are lots of people that misspells the word Myspace into Myspce. Maybe people get used to texting and also applied it in searching Myspace.

So if you happen to land on this page, I am sure you are looking for Myspace, right? To go to the real Myspace, click here -> Myspace.

Freindster - Home?

There are lots of Filipinos that are Freindster users, we all know that. Some even have more than one account, and some have created a profile of their newborn baby. What's more is that some had created a profile of their pet! Indeed, Freindster is the most popular social networking here in the Philippines.

But because of some who can't wait to log in on Friendster, they often misspells it. The word Friendster, turned into Freindster. Their brain are searching for Friendster but their fingers are typing Freindster. Sometimes, this also happens to me when I am searching for a term.

Mitral Valve: An overview

I am going to talk about mitral valve today and its disorder for this post. I would like to make it as simple as possible so that you, the readers, would easily understand. =]

So what is mitral valve?

Our heart contains four chambers. The upper chambers are called atrium/atria, which is divided into the right and left atria. The lower chambers are called ventricles, which is divided into the right and left ventricle. Between the atrium and the ventricles are valves, where blood flows between the atrium and ventricles. The valve that lies between the right atrium and the right ventricle is called the tricuspid valve. And the valve that lies between the left atrium and the left ventricle is called the mitral valve.

Common disorder of mitral valve:

The most common disorder of the mitral valve is mitral stenosis. It is a condition wherein the mitral valve narrows, making the flow of blood between the left atrium and the left ventricle to be inefficient. It is commonly caused by rheumatic fever(I will be discussing this condition in another post sometime in the future).

Treatment:

The most common solution in mitral stenosis is mitral valve surgery. It can be a mitral valve replacement or a mitral valve repair, depends on the assessment of the doctor. In mitral valve replacement, the whole mitral valve will be removed and will be replaced by a new one. For the mitral valve repair, the diseased mitral valve will not be removed, and will only be repaired.

That's the basics about mitral valve. I hope that you learned something new today from this blog post.

Charise Pempengco

Does anybody in the Philippines don't know who Charise Pempengco is? Well, maybe there is some. Some who doesn't have internet connection or TVs at their home. But most of the Filipino people are very proud of this young singing sensation who hit not only the internet community, but also places outside the Philippines. Here is a video of Charise Pempengco guesting in the show of Ellen DeGeneres.

You may wonder why I only posted this article right now because it is really really late. But my goal here is only to gain some traffic from it. =]

Firefox 3 downloaded

June 17, 2008 (U.S. Time) was a day to be anticipated for the whole internet community. It is the so called 'Firefox 3 download day'. It's goal was to set a Guiness record for the world's most downloads in a day. I downloaded Firefox 3 just this morning while I am watching the NBA Finals Game 6.

I am really impressed with this new version of Firefox. Aside from its new clean look, it is indeed fast! Before, it takes half a second to create new tabs (that's only applicable for my pc), but now, it immediately opens almost as soon as you press the control + T (shortcut for 'new tab'). The loading of the pages are also fast, but I don't know if that is due to my internet or Firefox 3, or just psychological. =]

For AVG users like me, you won't see the AVG Toolbar and AVG Search Tool anymore because it was not compatible with the latest version. I really like the AVG Search Tool. It is a tool wherein AVG searches all the website listed in Googel whenever you search a keyword. If the website is safe, AVG will put a green check mark indicating that it is safe to visit. I just hope that AVG will do something about this.

To download the latest version of Firefox, just go here.

The Other Diabetes

When you heard the word diabetes? What comes into your mind? Isn't it the blood sugar disorder?

Now, when you talk about diabetis, almost everyone knew that diabetes is the condition of the abnormal rise in blood sugar. It become synonymous with it, especially for us Filipinos. It is correct, but did you know that there is also a condition that has the word 'diabetes' in it?

That condition is called Diabetes Insipidus(DI). It is a condition wherein the person urinates a lot (polyuria = 20 Liters/day). The person urinates large amount because the body is lacking or has no hormone called antidiuretic hormone or vasopressin. As it's name tells you, it is anti diuretic, which means it helps prevents a person from excessive urination.

As a nurse and as a patient having this condition, our primary concern is to prevent dehydration. A patient must increase its oral fluid intake because the body is losing a lot of fluid via urination. Also, a patient must weigh daily, because weight is a good indicator if the body is losing a lot of fluids.

There are lots of details about Diabetes Insipidus. I just talked about the background of it and explain it as simple as I can so that any person would understand easily about the condition. I hope you learned something new today.

Happy Father's Day to my Dad and to all dads out there...

Happy Father's Day!!!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Dad. We may not talk about these 'serious' stuffs, and we are not expressive with our feelings, so I would use this post in thanking him. So here it goes.

I would like to thank my dad for giving me his support whenever I needed it. You may not tell or show me directly because you are busy with your work, but I know you are always there for me especially against by far the most toughest challenge that I faced, which is to pass the Nursing Board Exams, not only once, but twice.

I remembered when I kinda panicked because the date of the test is getting nearer and nearer, and I don't show it to you and to our family. He told me suddenly these few words, 'kaya mo yan' (you can do it). Though it was very short, it meant a lot to me at that time. It gives me confidence I needed and went on to pass the tests. And again, for the retake of the test, he told me again that if I did it once, I can do it again for the second time. It really builds the confidence to take the challenge and I thank you for that.

There are a lot of things that I can thank him but I guess a post will not be enough. So again, I would like to thank my dad for everything. Happy Father's Day Dad!

ProjectWonderful's new graph

I am looking for something to blog about but I found nothing interesting. So I have no choice but to blog about this one.

I noticed earlier this morning that Project Wonderful changed the look of their graph. This is how it looked like now:
The graph before looked like this:

They put the legend below the graph, compared before, the legend was in the left upper corner. They also took away the grids and replaced it with horizontal lines, and they replaced the colored dots to white dots. I can say that the graph now looked more professional than before.

The Battle of Bloggers...

Manny Pacquiao will be gunning his fourth title in four different weight division in June 28. But David Diaz, the WBC Lightweight Champion, promises to disappoint the Pinoy fans. He even apologizes in advance because this Pacquiao milestone (to be the first Asian to win titles in four different weight division) will not happen. Surely, this will be a battle.

But did you know that not only Manny Pacquiao and David Diaz will be put to battle this coming June 28? But bloggers too. Not the kind of battle you are thinking of. This is a battle in the SERP for the keyword Manny Pacquiao David Diaz result, or Pacquiao Diaz result.

I already posted my article for this SEO in my sports blog last month, and when I checked last week for the results of these keywords, I saw a couple of Pinoy bloggers already in the first page. I am sure a lot of Pinoy bloggers will start to invade the first page for this keyword maybe a week before the fight.

I also started a post for the keyword Manny Pacquiao David Diaz video. I know the above battle will be fierce, and this is my strategy to compensate in case I don't land a good place in the SERP for the keyword above.

So fellow blogger, what are you waiting for?Start making a post and join the fun now! =]

What is periampullary cancer?

I tried searching all over the net what is periampullary cancer, but the only relative information that I got was from the National Cancer Intitute. According to the NCI:

A cancer that forms near the ampulla of Vater (an enlargement of the ducts from the liver and pancreas where they join and enter the small intestine).

It is so brief that I did not get what I wanted. I tried looking for other pages, but their articles did not explained that much about periampullary cancer. What I did was to search a synonymous term of periampullary cancer which is periampullary carcinoma. This time I got lots of articles that explained about periampullary carcinoma. Here is a background according to eMedicine:

Carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater is a malignant tumor arising within 2 cm of the distal end of the common bile duct, where it passes through the wall of the duodenum and ampullary papilla. The common bile duct merges with the pancreatic duct of Wirsung at this point and exits through the ampulla into the duodenum. The most distal portion of the common bile duct is dilated (ie, forms the ampulla of Vater) and is surrounded by the sphincter of Oddi, which spirals upward around the terminal portion of the duct. Because of biliary outflow obstruction, carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater tends to manifest early, as opposed to other pancreatic neoplasms that often are advanced at the time of diagnosis.

Curative surgical resection is the only option for long-term survival. Surgical or radiologic biliary decompression, relief of gastric outlet obstruction, and adequate pain control may improve the quality of life but do not affect overall survival rate.

That is a more detailed information about periampullary cancer. I hope you learned something new from this blog. =]

And the BIG winner is....Ejay!!!!

I honestly thought that Robi would win this season of PBB Teen Edition. He always get massive votes whenever he got nominated by his housemates. I guess Ejay need the prize more than Robi. That may be the reason why people voted for Ejay.

Congratulations to the Falcon family because not only did Ejay win this PBB Teen Edition, but also his dad, Tatay Erning is the big winner for the guardians. Surely, lots and lots of money will arrive in the house of the Falcon family. =]

My Goal in Two Weeks

Again, I ballooned from 155 lbs to 161 lbs. Just look at my biggie belly in the my bad habit video. I lost control of my eating habits in the past few days, and got lazy to exercise. I stayed mostly in my computer, if not, playing Madden in my super old ps2.

I started changing my lifestyle last Sunday. I am trying to limit spending my time in front of the computer and try to exercise instead. I am currently weighing 159 lbs. My target weight on June 14 must be 150 lbs. I just hope I can make it, but if not, I still want to continue losing weight 'til I weigh 150 lbs.
